Care and Maintenance

Here are some guidelines you should follow to protect and preserve your brand new flooring:
1. When cleaning hardwood, make sure you ONLY USE cleaning products specially designed for wood floors. Not furniture, not general purpose cleaners, and ABSOLUTELY NO WET MOPS. There are several brands that offer such products. We recommend the BONA KEMI hardwood floor cleaning kit, as it is the most environmentaly friendly. (ask us about the kit!)
2. If you use a vacuum, make sure you use the appropriate attachment for hardwood floors, as regular wheels can scratch the finish.
3. Being a natural product, hardwood reacts to changes in moisture or temperature. Make sure you keep a steady temperature throughout the year, without big variations. To control the moisture level between the wet and dry seasons, humidifiers/dehumidifiers should be used to avoid gaps(not enough moisture) or cupping(too much moisture).
4. Exposure to direct sunlight can also damage your floors. The floors can fade or change color over time under direct light. This can be avoided by installing blinds or shades for your windows and doors. Also , it's recommended to have furniture and rugs moved around your house to ensure your floors get even exposure to light and traffic.
5. Avoid all sharp objects coming in contact with your hardwood. Furniture/bed/chair legs should get felt pads. Everything that gets moved, including appliances should be lifted and not dragged or pushed.
6. Place mats and rugs at all entry points, to avoid water, dust or any dirt being brought on your floors. Even the smallest piece of stone caught on the bottom of a shoe can have the effect of sand paper on the finish.
7. Even though some people do not support the practice, it's recommended to keep pets' nails trimmed as much as possible, especially with hyperactive pets.
8. Any spill should be wiped dry as soon as possible. Liquids left puddling on the floor can dull the finish and penetrate the wood, causing it to turn black and increasing the risk of mold forming.
9. For a long time, a mixture of water and vinegar was considered a good cleaning agent for hardwood. We do not recommend it, as vinegar's acidic properties can weaken the finish causing it to wear faster than usual.
